The shoulder stretch is to see if you are able to touch both your hands behind your back on both your right and left sides.
Thursday, July 1, 2010
The purpose of this test is to be able to see if you can touch your fingertips together behind your back by reaching over the shoulders and under the elbow. The test displays range of motion and flexibility of the shoulder muscles.
TESTING
Students will pair up with another partner in class. The partner will evaluate the other student's ability to complete the shoulder stretch. To test the left shoulder, a student will reach with the left hand over the left shoulder. At the same time, that student will take their right hand behind their back and reach up, trying to touch the fingertips of the left hand.
VALIDITY & RELIABILITY
The shoulder stretch test is validated for ages 5-17 and is recommended by NASPE. The test is measured in centimeters and scores are divided by right vs left shoulder, not by gender. The dominant side of a person results in a better score than the non-dominant side.
SAFETY
It is very important not to grab your fingertips behind your back of exceed past zero in the scoring because it can result in injury. Many people can tear muscles around the shoulder if not careful so make sure you complete the test properly. Also make sure to wear comfortable clothing when the test is administered. Any type of workout clothes would be fine.
SCORING
If the student is able to touch his or her fingers with the left hand over the shoulder, a "Y" is recorded for the left side. If not, the student will receive an "N", for needs improvement. If the students is able to touch his or her fingers with the right hand over the shoulder, a "Y" is recorded for the right side. If not, the students receives an "N". If a student receives an "N", their partner will measure in centimeters how far apart their fingertips are with a ruler. A ruler is the only equipment required for this test. A student needs a "Y" for both sides to attain a Healthy Fitness Zone.
July 13th
Thank You to all the students who participated in the shoulder stretch. Our next test will be on July 27th. For any students who were absent, makeups will be on July 28th. I am very happy with the effort from all my students and I look forward to doing the test again in 2 weeks. Start warming up!
